U KOH MADSUM SAMUI | A REVIEW BY LUXURY TRAVEL PUBLISHER.
U KOH MADSUM SAMUI, is actually located in Koh Madsum, an easily accessible island, 30 minutes away by private hotel transfer. U Koh Madsum Samui is the only accommodation on the island, and even so, they have managed to set a standard.
I’ve always had this ambition to visit a deserted island somewhere, put my feet up and kick back for a few days. The only draw back to this, is I knew I’d be stepping out of my comfort zone. Although I long for peace, tranquility, nature, the ocean and serenity, I couldn’t find anywhere which would afford my my required level of comfort, but deliver what I wanted as a ‘island getaway’.
Welcome, U Koh Madsum Samui. This is the resort, this is the place I have been waiting for.
All things checked off my list of island getaway “must have’s“, yet providing me 5 star level comfort for when I’ve had enough of doing nothing at the beach, admiring the serene views.
Getting here, and checking in:
Getting to U Koh Madsum Samui is easy. Upon booking, you’ll be asked what transfer time you’d like. There are 3 options departing Koh Samui: 8:30 am / 1:00 pm / 5:30 pm.
Returning to Koh Samui from the resort: 7:30 am / 12:00 pm / 4:30 pm.
We were picked up at the airport by a gentleman baring a name placard, who took us by minivan to Tong Tanote bay, where the boat will depart from. The journey by private mini van took around 30 minutes.
The 12:00pm boat took us across to U Koh Madsum Samui, and we arrived approximately 12:30, before being greeted by staff. A short stroll along the beach front, we reach our destination. U Koh Madsum Samui.
We were greeted by staff and went through the check in procedure. As custom with U Hotels, we were asked which soap we’d like to choose from, and then offered a cold towel and a welcome drink of island grown aanchan (butterly pea) – delicious and refreshing.
Shortly after, we were escorted to our villa.
We stayed at the Ocean front Pool Villa. With its panoramic views of the ocean, an private infinity plunge pool, large wooden sala and day bed, private sun loungers and garden, the grounds around the villas are perfect. The villas itself is appropriately but tastefully designed in a fusion of traditional thai and modern approach. Bamboo and wood, with a large four poster bed, round bathtub and large bathroom; this place is my haven!
A nice touch is the breakfast. You can opt to have it delivered to your time, at any time of the day. The choice isn’t huge, but it covers absolutely anything that I’d order at least. An all day breakfast delivered to your room… what could be better?
Another nice touch is the turndown, which comes with a little snack. We had sponge lava cake, with English toffee tea dressing. Absolutely divine after returning from dinner.
The Restaurant & Main Swimming Pool:
The restaurant and pool are within the same area, on the other side of the island. Don’t worry; it’s only a 1 minute walk. It’s rather a contrast to the serene and calm ocean that lies in front of the villa and resort; the rear is a beach much more rocky, and the ocean much more ferocious. Not good for swimming on this side, but the infinity pool is stunning.
The food, as with U Pattaya is superb. Both local Thai dishes, and western dishes and high standard. U Koh Madsum Samui suggest the thai food, and they have gone the distance to bring tradition Koh Samui type cuisine in to their restaurant. The chef’s have done a fantastic job, and although the menu is rather limited, it encompasses great flavours and some very impressive foods! Given such small and remote resort, I’d never expect to be half this good. I really have to give a big thumbs up to the food & beverage at U Koh Madsum Samui.
A side note, which I discovered through a little chat with the manager, is that U Koh Madsum Samui, is actually very keen on eco-friendly and green being. I was told that all food waste actually gets stored in containers with bacterias, then monthly are shipped back to the mainland and sent to farmers to use as fertiliser. I was very impressed by their attitude towards eco-friendly solutions. Further to that, they do their utmost to source local produce and vegetables!
All in all, I’d say U Koh Madsum Samui is the perfect place for those seeking a getaway. It’s remote, it’s serene, it’s peaceful and tranquil. It’s unique, it’s idillic and its beautiful. You can find your remote island at U Koh Madsum Samui.
That’s great and all, but what do I do there?
Well, this is it. This is the point. This place is the absolute getaway from the busy life, from the city life, from the hustle and bustle of the metropolis. To grab a book, perhaps a cocktail and rejoice in the serenity of U Koh Madsum Samui is an absolute pleasure in itself.
If this isn’t enough, there is ample snorkel gear for free hire, or even kayaks so you can explore the local area, and it’s pristine waters. There a fish-o-plenty for those keen on snorkelling, and the ocean around the front of the island is very still, making almost perfect conditions to spend hours ogling the wonders of the water world!
Furthermore to this, U Koh Madsum Samui also organise various day trips. Whether it be fishing, snorkelling, sightseeing etc, there are plenty to choose from with different day trips daily. I have posted a photo of this in the main gallery below.
